Why cracked APKs are a bad deal

To unlock a paid feature, someone has to change the app’s code and rebuild it. The rebuilt file can’t carry the developer’s signature, so it is signed with the cracker’s own key. From then on, you are trusting that person with whatever the app can reach on your phone.

You can’t easily tell what else was changed. Repackaged apps are a common way to spread malware, and an app that looks and works normally can still read your data in the background.

You also lose updates. Android only installs an update when its signature matches the installed app, so the official version won’t update a cracked copy. You have to uninstall it and lose its data, or keep going back to the same source.

And it costs the people who made the app. If it’s too expensive, there is often an open-source alternative that does the same job for free. That’s what this site is for.
